Know thyself- Anger management tips

Have you lately been angrier than usual? Do you end up shouting and screaming at the slightest of pretexts? O you feel so angry that adjustment with fellow beings becomes a headache? If you’re able to relate to all the above-mentioned phenomena, what is plaguing you is nothing but chronic anger. Believe it or not, around 7% of the US population suffers from uncontrollable rage. And if you, too, are suffering from the same it’s time you did something about it. Increasing levels of rage is a sign that you’re losing it and not one that you’re just irritated. Being angry is normal but being so all the time is cause for alarm.

So why exactly do you need to combat anger. Check these reasons out-

  1. If you feel angry most of the time, your cardio- vascular system will be affected most adversely. Chances of heart attacks and disorders will increase and you’ll be suffering from chronic ill- health. Most angry people suffer from acute stress and they do not know how to manage their rising stress levels.
  2. People who remain chronically angry often resort to substance abuse and excessive alcoholism. Moreover, depression and anxiety can affect a chronically anytime, anywhere.
  3. If you suffer from chronic anger it’s doubtful whether you’ll ever enjoy a peaceful existence with your family or colleagues. Reports claim that chronic anger not only aversely affects the immediate sufferer but also people around him. Many workplace disputes stem from excessive anger and so do most relationship- related problems.

Anger can actually drive a person up the wall and combined with the ill- effects it can even be deadly. This is where anger management has a major role to play. When you’re effectively trying to control your anger levels you’re actually trying your hand at anger management. So what is anger management all about? It is more about understanding yourself and your own requirements. Additionally a few basics also come handy-

Most angry people do not give two hoots about the situation that is causing them so much distress. All that they focus on is how to make an ‘effective’ outburst. This is rather ironical. If you’re severely angry try to analyze the situation that has made you so. This often manages a situation from getting out of control. If you know the reason behind your rising temper you can be better prepared the next time.

Do you know how to be assertive? If not, start working on it. People who are less assertive or not at all so tend to become angry fast and stay that way for a longer while. Remember, assertion does not mean rudeness; it simply requires you to speak your heart out under all possible circumstances.

Notice your reactions when you’re angry. Do you often clench your teeth? Or fold your fists? Or glare? Watching your own physical responses to mental changes can actually bring the situation under control. The fact that you concentrate on your physical responses also acts as some sort of distraction. Try out other forms of distraction too (one of the best techniques is to count backwards from 100).

Anger management is not something for which you need training. Be a little sensitive towards yourself and your surroundings and bid goodbye to your anger forever.
